“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.”
As both a writer and a musician, music plays a significant role in my life - and can be a source of debate in our household! While Jess and I have vastly different tastes and opinions on music, one thing we can agree on is how music can be a source of strength, fun, and reflection.
Music can invoke a sense of happiness. It can take you to a retrospective frame of mind. On the flip side, the right song can bring you to your knees. And no matter where someone is from or what their experiences have been, music is a universal language that can bring people together who otherwise share nothing else in common.
More and more we are using music during our sessions as both ice breaker between us and our clients and to set the mood. A fun dance song can make a couple feel silly and playful with each other, and a slower more sensual track can start igniting some fireworks.
While Jess and I have different tastes in music, there are also a lot of bands and artists that we both love and have continuously playing in the background in our home. We’ve curated some of our favorites that we would love to share with you!
2s my favorite 1 by Coheed and Cambria
There is a lot that I could say about this song, but the lyrics really say it all. Coheed and Cambria did an acoustic version of this song where the frontman, Claudio, performed it live with his wife. We really recommend that you check out this version! This was on of our top picks and one of the first songs that we added to our wedding playlist.
Whenever this starts playing at our home, I just look at Jess and give her a smile.
1979 by The Smashing Pumpkins
We recently saw The Smashing Pumpkins perform last year at the ACC and we are going to see them again this summer at Budweiser stage. To us, this band is absolutely timeless. Whether it’s a sonically heavy song like Zero or a more mellow song like 1979, this band provides a soundtrack for any mood.
We can’t help but sing along whenever we hear this song. It’s pure nostalgia for us.
Saturday Night by Whigfield
Well surprise, surprise! Yes, this extreme metal loving guy has a guilty pleasure - dance music from the 90s. Jess and I both grew up in the 90s, and music like this is about as 90s as you can get. Every time we buckle down to do a deep clean of our apartment, this song is the anthem playing in the background.
In fact, the whole Dance Mix 95 playlist is solid gold.
Below is a growing Spotify list of songs that Jess and I both love. From hard hitting and heavy to mellow and soulful, there really is a mix of everything. And that’s exactly who and what we are.
P.S.
For any couples working with us, we would love to create a personalized playlist of your very own to have playing while we shoot you!
